The continued support from Signatur has included the development and systematization of working methods in order to promote the development of inclusive music ensembles.

ShareMusic & Performing Arts, the national knowledge centre for artistic development and inclusion, is a development platform and resource that collaborates with the cultural sector as well as the education, social and public sectors and the research world. It is a local, regional, national and international platform that supports and equips for a lasting inclusive work within the entire cultural ecosystem. It is an innovative work that also explores the opportunities that new technology and digitalisation can offer in the form of expanded participation and creation in cultural life for people with disabilities.
ShareMusic offers collaboration, training and competence development. All work is based on human rights and the equal value of all human beings. The work is also clearly linked to Agenda 2030 and the global development goals for inclusion and sustainable development. The vision is that all people should have the opportunity to express themselves artistically in a world where differences are seen as valuable.

OUR OWN INCLUSIVE MUSIC ENSEMBLE
ShareMusic’s own inclusive music ensemble Elefantöra is an important part of the work with artistic development. With the help of Signatur, among others, Elefantöra has developed into a unique resource consisting of musicians with experience from both inclusive and laboratory artistic work in various contexts. They have collaborated with string orchestras and chamber music ensembles as well as with researchers and dancers. The work with Elefantöra also contributes to the development of repertoires for inclusive ensembles.

An oasis where the atmosphere is relaxed but the musical experience is exciting and explosive. Tchaikovsky’s greatest symphony, a Kurdish world star, Philip Glass’s foremost symphonic work and one of Sweden’s greatest multi-artists. And all accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra, consisting of 80 hand-picked top young musicians.

August 16-17 , Gränslandet – A Symphonic Festival took over Trädgården for the third consecutive year. The programme presented a riotous mix of classical works, modern art music and pop. In the late summer heat, the area under Skanstull Bridge was transformed into an exuberant cultural bonanza and harvest festival. For two days and two nights the audience was invited into an ensemble of culinary experiences, art, socialising and top-class music. During the late evenings and nights, the festival turned into a unique club atmosphere where the audience could dance to the best electro dance music or settle into one of the smaller, more intimate rooms to listen to chamber music until the early hours of the morning.

Gränslandet’s Symphony Orchestra, which is the pride and core of the festival, presented, under the direction of conductor Christian Karlsen, everything from Tchaikovsky’s great 4th Symphony, Philip Glass’s epic 6th symphony Plutonian Ode to Lili Boulanger’s last orchestral work and Revueltas’s musical description of how to kill a snake. Together with 2019 year’s artists, the Kurdish world star Ciwan Haco and the Swedish multi-artist and singer Mariam the Believer, performed their pop songs in a way we have never heard before. At midnight both nights, pianist David Huang lead the audience in an oasis of silence as he performs Bach’s Goldberg Variations during two unique silent concerts in collaboration with Yamaha.

The founders of the Gränslandet Symphonic Festival are pianist David Huang, conductor Christian Karlsen and venue operators Trädgården (under the direction of Johanna Beckman). The festival was produced by ALMA in partnership with Bohm Bohm Room. The project was implemented with support from Signatur Foundation Sweden, the Swedish Arts Council and the Yamaha Piano Center in Sweden.

The city of Sundbyberg in Stockholm county implemented the project ”Meet in Music – Whole Life” stating in 2019 and with an extension (because of Covid-19) until and throughout 2023 with support from Signatur Foundation Sweden. The project provided a unique opportunity to strengthen and develop the work from a music therapy perspective of using music to improve the quality of life of the elderly in nursing and care homes.

Since 2010 the city’s adult social care department has included a full-time music therapist who works on integrating music, dance and movement as part of the daily nursing routine.

With the support from Signatur Foundation Sweden, another part-time therapist was hired and 10 young people aged 16-25 years was also recruited in partnership with the cultural school in Sundbyberg. These young people have worked one day every two weeks in the city’s retirement/care homes and drop in centres to create musical encounters across the generations.

The vision is to spread knowledge about music as a unique tool for the health and well-being of our elderly. When music is used in the right way, it can create calmness amid anxiety, a stimulus to engage in activities, and communication when words are not enough or have run out.

Meaningful encounters in music create a sense of belonging and context which can provide health benefits for both the elderly and the staff, and not least for the young people who have got the experience of “making a difference”.

With the support of Signatur Foundation Sweden, Kristianstad Municipality in association with Musik i Syd, can expand its work and create the conditions for children to engage with classical music and the Kulturkvarteret venue in Kristianstad. Musik i Syd wants more people to discover the venue and to feel at home both there and in the music. This project, Classical Music – Get Closer, develops new ways to enhance children´s experience of and participation in classical music activities.

Musik i Syd is a music institution in the Skåne and Kronoberg regions that aims to give people access to creative and live music experiences. Its activities are part of the municipality´s cultural policy and it works to realise the goals of an active cultural policy to make live music accessible outside major cities. Musik i Syd´s various initiatives and programmes provide adults and children in the region with the opportunity to experience high-quality music in places where it would otherwise not be possible to produce and provide such a range of music events. Each year, Musik i Syd presents over 3,000 concerts, often in collaboration with local organisers, for over 300,000 spectators.

With the support of Signatur Foundation Sweden, Young Minds For Music (UTOM) began implementing the project “The Roots of Music Life” in 2021.

In connection with its 250th anniversary in 2021, the Royal Academy of Music announced a “Year of Music”. This project is UTOM’s anniversary gift and aims to reach out to the roots of music life throughout the country, with a particular focus on the birth places of UTOM’s members or those places to which the members have a strong connection. These roots are the ecosystem of Swedish music life, the multifaceted chain of learning consisting of everything from music and cultural schools, study associations, folk high schools, higher music educations, to local and regional associations, orchestras, choirs, bands, etc.

Activities around Sweden

Here are some of the activities that have been implemented, despite the pandemic, since the start of the project:

Choral conductor and church musician Justin Hazelgrove and UTOM’s operations manager Max Låke gave an inspirational digital lecture to teachers at Karlshamn Music School on how to ignite the spark in their students and keep it alive.

UTOM’s Robin Cochrane went home to Östersund where he held a workshop in West African music at Birka Folk High School.

Producer and agent Noomi Hedlund went digitally home to Eskilstuna and gave a talk to all staff at Eskilstuna Cultural School about the current status of wind music and the challenge of getting children and young people to start playing an instrument.

Lyricist and rapper Erik Lundin returned to his old primary school, Ellen Keyskolan in Spånga. There, together with music teacher Nathaniel Glaser Skog, he taught students in year 8 to write hip-hop lyrics.

UTOM alumnus Filip Jers packed up his harmonica and went to Höör to offer a harmonica workshop for the students at the Cultural School.

Musical theatre star Frida Modén Treichl guest performed with the El Sistema National Orchestra at Stockholm Concert Hall.

UTOM alumnus Anna Christensson went home to Skövde to lecture at her old school – Music High School Västerhöjd.

Choral conductor and church musician Justin Hazelgrove visited Karlshamn Music School and held a choral clinic with all staff.

Artist and project manager Sousou Cissoko, who is one of the world’s few female kora players, returned to Höör and lectured at the Cultural School.

Many planned activities in the project have been postponed until the Spring of 2022.

Cross-genre music network

Young Minds For Music (UTOM) is an autonomous and independent network that aims to harness the imagination, potential and voice of young people working in the professional music world. At the heart of its activities are young professionals from all music professions and musical genres who meet, develop and work together for the inclusive, challenging, tolerant and bold cultural climate of the future. UTOM consists of 40 members, aged between 25 and 40 years, elected for a four-year term.

With support from Signatur Foundation Sweden, Songlines can strengthen its programme in the county of Stockholm by offering young refugees in Sweden access to integrated music activities, mixed with language learning and cooking. The ambition is to help bridge cultural gaps and provide the opportunity to join a new society.

Songlines started in 2017 and has been funded by the Swedish Legacy Fund, implemented by Jeunesses Musical Sweden (JMS). Since then, the well-known artist Sting donated the full prize money he received for the Polar Music Prize to Songlines, and the project also won the Music Award of the Future. Songlines aims to welcome young refugees in Sweden and give them the opportunity to express themselves through culture and music in an inclusive environment. The project creates meeting spaces and team-building inclusive activities and implements the idea of everyone taking part. Together we create the society we want. This is why Songlines works to instil hope and give young people the opportunity to connect through culture and music. The collaboration with JMS ended in December 2019 but the project is continuing in Stockholm through Signatur Foundation Sweden and Länsmusiken in the county of Stockholm.

The El Sistema Foundation is a unifying force for development of quality educational methods by offering educational platforms and role models such as El Sistema Academy, El Sistema Play, the international music camp Side by Side by El Sistema, and the Dream orchestra for newly arrived lone young people in western Sweden. In order to develop the foundation’s activities on all musical levels, from pre-school to advanced musical levels, El Sistema Sweden is now planning with support from Signatur to establish several more role model orchestras and activities aimed at the youngest children and children with special needs. The plan is also to establish and develop a teachers’ network, to develop its repertoire and to enhance its benchmarking in order to better evaluate and develop its activities.
